Working out with NYC Ballet Dancers
Last Saturday I was invited by a collaboration between PUMA and Sportcheck to workout with two New York City Ballet dancers. A group of us gathered at Toronto’s Extension Room, a lovely airy and white washed dance studio near the Distillery District at 8am to try out the PUMA En Pointe collection. PUMA En Pointe is a new collection inspired by dance, both in aesthetic, with soft pink and satin bows, as well as in practical use, with shoes with flexible soles and soft uppers to allow for articulation of the foot, a very important aspect of dance, particularly ballet.
Working out with New York City Ballet
Two New York City Ballet Dancers, Olivia Boisson and Meagan Mann treated us to a ballet & dance inspired workout. The girls began with a short talk about how they warm up in the morning before their class (including some personal tips) as well as some common ballet terms. Both Olivia and Meagan described their experience and what life as a dancer with the NYC Ballet company looks like. Following the workout we had the opportunity to speak with the dancers, who were so lovely and personable. Meagan even told myself and my cousin Meghan, whom I invited with me, that we had pretty hands (going to remember that compliment forever)!
The School of American Ballet (the official school of NYC Ballet) & New York City Ballet use the Balanchine method. A method adapted from the Russian Vaganova method. Having studied Cechetti myself, I learned several facts which which separate the two methods, such as the head not moving while working at the barre and that the hands are held more rounded than in other methods.
PUMA En Pointe Collection
Upon arrival at the studio, yoga mats housing workout related gifts filled the floor. Each participant received a personalized pink Swell water bottles, PUMA shoes, a workout towel and a pink PUMA backpack filled with PUMA leggings, tank top and sports bra from the En Pointe collection, as well as a NYC Ballet sweatshirt (my favourite piece) and PUMA socks, Batiste dry shampoo and RMS (one of my favourite natural beauty brands!) makeup remover wipes. The PUMA En Pointe collection is cute and practical if you’re a dancer. I love the shoes especially (although I wish I got the pink ones, which have satin bows like pointe shoes) they are ideal for a barre, or dance class such as jazz, or hip hop as the malleability of he shoe gives your foot the space it needs to perform all the small movements in dance. The bra and leggings are comfortable and stylish, with subtle details in the back of the bra and along the calve of the leggings.
Thank you to PUMA, Sportcheck and New York City Ballet for the opportunity, it was a lovely way to wake up on a Saturday morning.
